I wonder how mora’s serious fans feel:

Kevin Gregg allowed only three home runs all last year. One of them was memorable to Cubs fans — a three-run, pinch-hit blast by Daryle Ward on August 15, 2008 in Miami that gave the Cubs a 6-5 win over the Marlins. At the time Gregg hadn’t allowed a HR since May.

In 2009, in half as many innings as he pitched last year, he’s now allowed twice as many homers — six. Last night’s hurt more than any of the other five, as Ryan Raburn’s pinch-hit, two-run homer erased a 4-3 lead and gave the Cubs a taste of the medicine they delivered three straight times last week to other teams, a 5-4 loss to the Tigers.

This ruined a night that looked like it was going as originally planned by Cubs brass before the season started: a fine seven-inning performance by Carlos Zambrano, whose only mistake was the two-run homer Brandon Inge slammed off him; a solid inning of relief from Carlos Marmol, and some timely hitting capped by a two-run homer from Micah Hoffpauir.

In fact, I was mentally composing this recap as Gregg recorded the first out in the ninth, even after he walked Don Kelly to put a runner on base. It was going to be titled “Designated Hoffpauir”, since Micah was the Cubs’ first DH of the 2009 season.

Instead, it’s one of the toughest losses of the season. The Cardinals beat the Mets in the only NL game of the night, so the Cubs fall 3.5 games off the pace in the NL Central. However, no one still seems to want to step up and dominate the division. The Brewers lost to the Twins at home — and their pitching staff is starting to live up to my prediction that they would be “Gallardo and four Suppans”. The Cubs trail Milwaukee by only 1.5 games.

The offense did a decent job against one of the better pitchers in the AL this year, Edwin Jackson. Derrek Lee singled and doubled; Milton Bradley didn’t have any hits but drew two walks. The biggest bone I can pick about last night’s game (other than the walkoff) is the Cubs’ failure to score more than one run in the first inning after loading the bases with nobody out. They had the chance to break the game open and maybe even get Jackson out of there, but couldn’t.

One final note about shutouts with double-digit hits for the scoreless team, as we were discussing yesterday; on June 20, 1974, Rick Reuschel shut out the Pirates at Wrigley Field 1-0, giving up 12 hits (including three doubles!). He was helped out by a pair of double plays. (Thanks to George Castle for the reminder.) It almost seems as if Cubs pitchers have to throw shutouts and hit home runs themselves for the Cubs to win these days. They still need another bat, even when Aramis Ramirez comes back, and Lou says A-Ram will start taking BP this Friday at the Cell:

“Once we get to that stage, it’s just a matter of when he goes out for a rehab assignment,” Piniella said. “He is going to have to go out and play and get some at-bats. … We can start seeing light at the end of the tunnel with this thing now.”

Onward to tonight. A win would provide more light in that tunnel, too.

what do you think? This will be shocking news for mora fans, but some of you who will say that you saw it coming from a mile away. I can’t say I’m all that surprised. mora is spectacular, I hope this doesn’t affect the rest of the team.

A lot of people really love this guy. I think pie is dreadful:

Blowouts were the rule rather than the exception but the exception featured arguably the best pitching performance turned in by a Jays farmhand this season.  It was a 3-2 night for the affiliates with Lansing enjoying the day off, save for one Lugnut who was at the Midwest League All-Star Game.

Tacoma 14 Las Vegas 4

Tacoma, WA - The Mariners affiliate totaled six runs in the first three innings, scored another two in the fifth and rolled a six after the seventh-inning stretch.  Brian Burres was the victim of this senseless slaughter by giving up 12 runs (only 10 earned though!) on 13 hits and two walks while whiffing three in six innings.  Jeff Clement and Chris Shelton each took the former Oriole and Ottawa Lynx lefty deep.  Bubbie Buzachero mopped up in relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits over two innings but did strike out two.

Kevin Howard and Buck Coats were the lone bright spots for the 51’s offence.  Howard hit two solo homers and a double and Coats also reached base thrice with a single and two walks.  Joe Inglett was 0-for-5 in his return to Vegas.

New Hampshire 9 Reading 4

Reading, PA - Lots of hits and errors in this one as both teams combined for 21 hits and two clanks apiece.  Randy Boone survived a two-out rally in the first when the Phillies had a hit and an walk and set down the side in order in the second with two strike outs.  However, Reading scored the first two runs of the game in the third with a pair of doubles and a Michael Taylor RBI single.  Boone bounced back from a Brad Emaus error at second to get an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

The Fisher Cats had problems on the base paths in the early going when Todd Donovan was thrown out trying to steal second in the first and Scott Campbell was picked off at first to end the third.  However, the offence exploded for a seven-run fourth off Oregon State College World Series star Eric Stutes Cody Haerther singled with the bases loaded to bring home the first run.  The second run scored when Reading catcher Ozzie Chavez dropped the ball after Darin Mastroianni hit a grounder to first.  Luis Sanchez took advantage by delivering a two-run single to make the score 4-0.   Donovan followed with a sac fly, Brian Dopirak knocked home another run with a single and Adam Calderon had an RBI double to make it 7-0.  He was denied a second ribbie when Dopirak was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Boone retired six hitters in a row but an error by Dopirak extended the fifth inning and Taylor went deep for a two-run homer to cut the New Hampshire lead to 7-4.  However, “Big Brian” matched Taylor’s two-run blast in the sixth with one of his own to score a Campbell single and that restored the Cats five-run bulge.  Boone worked through a couple of singles and a walk in a shutout sixth and Rommie Lewis went three innings to get the save as he scatted two hits and two walks while striking out four.  Boone allowed four runs (two earned) in six innings while yielding eight hits and two walks.  He struck out four to improve to 5-4 on the year.

Dopirak connected for his 17th homer of the season in a three hit game at the dish.  Campbell was on base four times with one hit and three walks.  Brian Jeroloman had a couple of safeties but no walks so the “BJBB Meter” remains one shy of 30.

Dunedin 2 Brevard County 1

Viera, FL - When your club strikes out 17 times in a game, you shouldn’t expect a win - unless your pitching is absolutely stellar!  That was the case as D-Jays starter Andrew Liebel enjoyed his best start as a pro.  Liebel gave up just one run on one hit against the Brewers affiliate.  Lee Haydel had the only safety as he singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on another ground ball.    After that, Liebel retired 13 straight hitters into the eighth before an error by John Tolisano in the eighth.  That didn’t bother Liebel one bit as he induced a 6-3 inning-ending double play.  Tolisano drove in both runs as he belted a solo homer in the third and drove in a Sean Shoffit double in the eighth to snap the 1-1 tie.  Zach Dials locked it up for Liebel with a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Liebel struck out six and didn’t walk a batter in his eight innings and recorded a whopping 13 ground outs.  Tolisano and Moises Sierra had two hit nights and Jonathan Jaspe had a hit and a walk.  However, every Dunedin batter struck out as least once as Justin Jackson and Eric Thames each had a hat trick.

Lansing Lugnuts - Scheduled Day Off

Midwest League All-Star GameBrian Van Kirk was the lone Lugnut to play in the game because the club’s other All-Star selection, pitcher Henderson Alvarez, had pitched Sunday.  Van Kirk was 0-for-2 with a strikeout after PH’ing and DH’ing.

Jamestown 7 Auburn 0

Jamestown, NY - D-Days starter Matthew Morgal was lit up in the first inning as the Marlins affiliate scored four runs on three walks, two singles, a hit by pitch and an Eric Eiland error in center field.  Morgal did set down the final seven hitters he faced before giving the ball to Zach Outman in the fourth.  He gave up a run that inning on a single, an errant pickoff attempt and a sac fly.  Dave Sever relieved in the fifth and gave up the other two runs on two singles and a double and a Markus Brisker error in right also figured into the mix.  Like Morgal, Sever settled down by retiring the last seven men he faced.  Lefty Willi Mendez had a shaky eighth by giving up three singles and uncorking a wild pitch but Christopher Hopkins threw out a runner at second with a 7-4 put out.

The D-Days managed just six hits and two walks in this one.  Jack Murphy had the lone two-hit game and Eric Eiland had a hit, a walk and a stolen base.  Kevin Nolan joined Murphy as the only Auburn players to get a two-base hit.

Gulf Coast Blue Jays 7 Gulf Coast Phillies 1

Clearwater, FL - The G-Jays took control of this one by scoring twice in the second inning and three more times in the third.  Matthew Nuzzo put the visitors in flight with an RBI single to score a John Roberts base knock and a Gustavo Pierre fielder’s choice scored a Michael Crouse walk.  Roberts‘ double brought home a Yudelmis Hernandez two-bagger, Crouse singled home Roberts and a wild pitch allowed Crouse to score the G-Jays fifth run.  Crouse also delivered a two-run triple in the seventh to score a Yan Gomez single and a Carlos Perez walk.

Chris Holguin earned the win with five shutout innings and allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out two.  Lefty Carlos Pina surrendered the lone Phillies run which was unearned thanks to a Pierre error.  He scattered two hits and a walk in his two frames of work.  Lefty Dan DeLucia worked a one-walk eighth while punching out one and David Slovak survived a two-walk ninth while striking out one to keep the Phils off the board.  Roberts, Gomes and Crouse each had two hits and Gomes drew two of the six G-Jay walks.  Crouse also added a stolen base.

No matter what they say, I can’t stop thinking hill is interesting -

Okay, that’s not exactly what he said. But Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgren does think his young team’s nightlife activities may have led to some “fatigue” issues heading into the playoffs.

Holmgren spoke to reporter Wayne Fish of the Bucks County Courier Times (We are. CR.) about where the Flyers need to improve next year and he puts discipline on and off the ice high on that to-do list.

That’s a natural maturation process that a lot of our younger players are still going through. We’ve addressed that. So am I concerned about it? We’ll see how it goes this year. All our players have been talked to about it. Is it an issue? The fact that we’ve talked about it, I guess it is an issue.”

But if it’s an issue of wins and losses as opposed to the usual please-don’t-have-a-photo-of-you-covered-in-magic-marker-penises-pop-up-online, Flyers blogger RonnyBrook did some number-crunching to track the team’s record on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays of last year. Winning percentage on “hangover” days? .568. Work days? .500

So flawed logic dictates that in order for the Flyers to do some serious damage in the playoffs next season, they need to start incorporating some Tuesday/Wednesday benders into their gametime preparation. Oh and doesn’t the signing of Ray Emery make so much more sense now?

Noone can top hill these days -

What’s new with Jay Feely? Well, he eagled the par-5 eighth at Liberty National on Monday, so that’s fun. Oh, and later that day, he went on Hannity and told the nation he’s scared of President Obama.

You see, the New York Jets‘ kicker isn’t just one of those dumb jocks who misses three field goals in one game. He’s more urbane than that. He follows the news and has a working knowledge of history. He went to the University of Michigan, and he graduated. Also, he thinks Barack Obama is really a socialist Muslim whose policies are meant to cripple the country, and for some reason, Feely isn’t a fan. (Or, you know, something like that.)

Worldly, well-spoken and capable of alluding to the foundation of character traits that makes Amuricah great? Sign this guy up for The Great American Panel.

So last night, when Feely hobnobbed with Hannity and two other white men, the conversation dealt with Iran. Hannity cited Reagan and Solidarity — what else would he do? — and when he turned to Feely for insight, the placekicker didn’t whiff. He quoted the 19th-century clergyman Phillips Brooks (not Phillip Brooks, mind you), and even better, he referenced leadership in the process. He talked about character and honor. He brought up Iran, and North Korea, and some dude named Chavez. It was almost like he had an offensive coordinator feeding talking points in his ear.

Per Feely’s Twitter bio — the ADD version of Wikipedia — the kicker is a “golfing fanatic, fishermen, Christian, with political aspirations.” Wonder which party has his vote.

Nate Silver, start breaking down the polls: Feely 2012!

Freel is at it again:

Since the Cubs were probably singin’ the blues all the way to Detroit last night, where their plane landed about 1:20 AM Eastern time, a few pop culture references won’t hurt here, right?

In 1978, the Cubs managed to stay in contention (they were only 3.5 games out of first place in the NL East as late as September 3) despite having one of the least powerful offenses in modern memory. They hit only 72 home runs — and only Dave Kingman, who had 28 in his first year with the team, hit more than nine (Bobby Murcer was second on the team with that total, after having hit 27 the year before). Still, they somehow managed to score 664 runs, which ranked fifth in the National League.

One wit (and if I could remember who, I’d give him credit) dubbed it the “Rush Street offense” — i.e., “lots of singles, no action”.

Without fear of contradiction, I can call last night’s 2-0 Cubs loss to the Braves exactly that, since the Cubs put ten singles on the board and drew three walks. One of the 13 baserunners was erased on a double play, leaving 12. The Cubs left RISP in the first (after the double play!), sixth, seventh and ninth innings. Someone else will no doubt look this up, but I cannot remember the last time the Cubs — or for that matter, any team — had ten hits in a game and got shut out.

This all wasted yet another fine effort from Ryan Dempster, who left the game with two out in the 7th having thrown a somewhat-alarmingly high total of 118 pitches. A walk got him in trouble in the 3rd; that resulted in the Braves‘ first run, the only one they needed.

Lou decided to rest both Alfonso Soriano and Milton Bradley last night. Whether having them in the lineup would have made any difference is something we can discuss endlessly, but Bradley did pinch-hit in the 9th inning and struck out. Pinch-hitter is a role Bradley isn’t, apparently, well-suited for. In his career, Milton is now 3-for-26 (all singles — there’s that single thing again) with eight walks as a PH. Incidentally, Milton is one of 32 former Montreal Expos who have played at least one game in the major leagues this year (so is Ted Lilly, in case you didn’t know. Hat tip to Chuck Hildebrandt for the list which he posted on a SABR mailing list to which I subscribe).

And so is Javier Vazquez, Atlanta’s starter last night, who has been much better over the course of his career in the National League (not including last night’s game, career ERA in the NL: 4.15, in the AL: 4.52). He kept getting into trouble with all the singles, yet kept finding ways to get out of trouble as well. The White Sox may eventually get some value out of that deal with Tyler Flowers, who is an excellent prospect, but for now, advantage Atlanta.

Speaking of deals, the wasted detour to Atlanta once again shows that even after Aramis Ramirez returns (which may or may not happen soon, depending on who you ask, Lou or A-Ram), this team needs another bat. Ryan Freel, on a rehab assignment, isn’t the answer. In addition to a certain Cleveland Indian, targets might include Mark Teahen of the Royals, and since the Diamondbacks may soon be sellers, what about Chad Tracy (presuming he’s healthy)?

Onward to Detroit, for the Cubs’ first appearance there since 2001, and the Cubs’ first DH games of the season.

.

I want to see how this is going to effect the rest of the season!

I wonder how Johnson’s real fans feel -

The Ultimate Fighter Finale is tonight at 9pm on Spike TV. Whether or not you watched this entire season, I highly suggest you tune in tonight to see the finals, as welterweights DeMarques Johnson and James Wilks face off, as well as lightweights Ross Pearson and Andre Winner, as they fight for 6-figure UFC contracts.

This Week in Sports
(Submitted by gearhead)
The week began with the crowning of a champion and ended with everyone waiting for Bethpage Black to dry out. The Lakers won their 15th NBA Championship, and with it came much speculation on what it means for Kobe Bryant. With the end of the NBA and NHL seasons, we’ve hit the dog days of summer, but at least Artie Lange gave us a thrill by destroying Joe Buck’s craptacular talk show. Football (as always) remained in the news, thanks to Dante Stallworth’s light legal sentence (but tough NFL penalty), Chad Ocho Cinco’s insanity, and the super-secret UFL draft. In what the rest of the world calls football, the US national team showed what their 2010 World Cup chances look like. The answer: Not good. With the weekend here, we can look forward to the conclusion of the US Open, even if it ends up being Monday or Tuesday, and the continuation of Interleague baseball. Remember when people cared about that?

haha, I can’t believe this guy,

Dirk Nowitzki has filed for sole custody of the child that might not be his, while his ex-girlfriend is under FBI investigation for threatening his attorney from jail. It’s all one big ball of crazy.

FBI agents in Texas have seized recordings of threatening jailhouse phone calls made by Crista Ann Taylor, the ex-girlfriend of Dallas Mavericks All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki, to the player’s attorney, two sources with knowledge of the investigation said.

Taylor’s prison phone calls allegedly contained threats as well as demands for money from Nowitzki, whom she has referred to in numerous media interviews as her former fiancé, and many of Taylor’s phone calls were made to the offices of Nowitzki’s Dallas-based attorney, the sources said.

This woman is a few crayons short of a whole box. Everyone knows you’re supposed to wait until after the kid is born and then go after the money. You know, for the good of the kid.
